WordPress maintenance for online shops

Last updated on

In a shop, every outage is directly measurable. We maintain WooCommerce installations with staging tests, checkout checks after every update and round-the-clock monitoring – so orders keep flowing, even at weekends.

Why shops need more maintenance than websites

A shop does not consist of WordPress alone, but of WooCommerce, payment and shipping interfaces, tax logic and often an ERP integration. Any update can break one of these connections – and a broken checkout does not announce itself. That is why shops are not just updated but tested after every update.

Checkout tests

After every update we check the cart, checkout and payment with a test order – not just whether the page loads.

Staging instead of live operation

Critical updates run on a copy first. Only what passes there without errors goes live.

Maintenance windows

Updates are applied during low-revenue periods, and on request aligned with your sales figures.

Payment interfaces

PayPal, Klarna, Stripe or purchase on invoice: we check that callbacks and order statuses arrive correctly.

Security & customer data

Firewall, login protection, malware scans and country blocking protect order and customer data in the shop backend.

Performance

Load time has a direct effect on conversion. Caching, image optimisation and CDN are configured separately for shop pages.

Backups with order data

Daily external backups including the database – so no orders are lost if a restore is needed.

24/7 monitoring

Uptime and checkout monitoring report disruptions automatically, including at night and on public holidays.

Industry knowledge

What do online shops need to consider in website maintenance?

For online shops, every hour of downtime counts directly as lost revenue. After updates, the cart, payment methods and order emails must therefore be checked. Since 28 June 2025, the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG, the German Accessibility Strengthening Act) also applies to many shops that target consumers. Only micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees and annual turnover of no more than two million euros are exempt.

Legal framework for shops

  • BFSG: Accessibility for online shops selling to consumers since 28.06.2025, fines of up to €100,000 possible.
  • § 312j BGB: Clearly labelled order button, e.g. “order with obligation to pay”.
  • Art. 32 GDPR: Protection of customer accounts, addresses and order data.
  • PSD2: Strong customer authentication for online payments via the payment provider.
  • § 5 DDG: Complete imprint in the shop as well.

What we check with every maintenance

  • Test order with all active payment methods after updates
  • Order and invoice emails arrive
  • Order button and checkout texts still correct and unchanged
  • Keyboard operation and contrast in the checkout not degraded
  • Load time of category and product pages
  • Database backup several times a day

As a rule, no. We test critical updates beforehand on a copy. Only if a maintenance mode is unavoidable do we schedule it in a low-revenue window.

Yes, with a test order including the payment route and confirmation email. That is the difference from purely automatic updating.

An administrator account is required for maintenance work. We use it exclusively for that purpose, access is logged, and we conclude a data processing agreement.

Our focus is WordPress with WooCommerce. We cannot offer maintenance for other systems.

Your shop sells. We keep it online.
