Why many backups fail when it matters
Most websites have some kind of backup. In an emergency, it often turns out to be incomplete, outdated or stored in the wrong place. Four mistakes come up again and again.
Backup on the same server
If the server fails, is compromised or the account is deleted, the backup is affected too. It must be stored externally.
Files only, no database
Content, orders and users live in the database. Without it, you get an empty website back.
Restore never tested
An archive that can't be restored is not a backup. The restore must be verified before you need it.
Retention too short
Some damage only becomes apparent after weeks. If only yesterday's version is left, the error has been backed up too.
Rule of thumb: It isn't the backup that protects your website, but the verified restore.
