Why airport websites can't afford downtime

Airports operate around the clock, and so does their website. It serves passengers on their way to the terminal, people collecting travellers who check arrival times, local residents with questions about aircraft noise, and applicants for ground handling, security and technical roles. Every disruption is noticed immediately, every second of load time counts, and load peaks occur precisely when something is already going wrong.

Security

Critical infrastructure attracts attacks. A firewall, login protection, two-factor authentication and ongoing malware scans secure the public web presence.

Load peaks & availability

During strikes, storms or disruptions, traffic rises abruptly. Caching, image optimisation and a properly configured server keep the site available even then.

Parking & booking flows

Parking booking, lounge reservations and service offerings run via plugins or external services. After every update, we check that the flow runs through to the confirmation.

Directions, parking, terminal information

Maps, site plans and PDF downloads are the most frequently searched content. We regularly check links, file sizes and external embeds.

Performance & accessibility

People search on mobile, on the move, often on an overloaded mobile network. Short load times, readable contrasts and clean headings are a must here, not an optional extra.

Updates & backups

Tested updates in defined maintenance windows, daily external backups, including documented restoration.

Round-the-clock monitoring

Operations don't end at 5 p.m. Our monitoring reports outages automatically, including at night, at weekends and on public holidays.

Industry knowledge

What is particularly important for an airport website?

Airport websites must remain available even during load peaks, for example during strikes, storms or at the start of the holidays, when thousands of travellers check flight status and directions at the same time. In addition, there are booking flows for parking or lounges, which, as an online service for consumers, may fall under the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG). The website should be strictly separated from operationally critical systems.

Legal framework for airports

  • BFSG: Accessibility for online bookings with consumers, such as parking, since 28 June 2025.
  • BSI-KritisV: Large airports count as critical infrastructure in the transport and traffic sector.
  • Art. 32 GDPR: Protection of booking and payment data.
  • § 25 TDDDG: Consent for tracking and external services.

What we check during every maintenance

  • Round-the-clock availability, including during load peaks
  • Flight status and directions information loads
  • Parking booking and payment processing
  • CDN and caching for visitor peaks
  • Language versions fully accessible
  • Careers portal and applications

A regional airfield and a commercial airport with parking booking, flight information and a careers portal are technically worlds apart, and so is the maintenance effort. We calculate based on actual scope rather than a flat rate.

What determines the effort

Traffic volume and load peaks, connected systems such as parking booking or flight information, number of language versions and subsidiaries, requirements for availability and round-the-clock maintenance windows.

You can reach us by email and phone – also with questions that contain no IT jargon.

Yes. Updates can be scheduled in fixed, low-traffic time windows and announced in advance. We test major version jumps beforehand in a staging environment.

At the start, we review caching, image delivery and server configuration and optimise them in a targeted way. If the hosting environment is not sufficient, we say so openly and suggest alternatives.

The WordPress site and its integration, yes. After every update, we test whether the flow runs through to the confirmation, and we report disruptions to the respective service provider.

In that case we calculate per website and agree common maintenance windows and a combined report for the group.
