What is WordPress maintenance?

WordPress maintenance covers all the technical work that keeps a website secure, up to date and functional over the long term after launch. This includes updates to the WordPress core, themes and plugins, regular backups, protection against attacks, monitoring of availability and ongoing checks of loading times.

WordPress is a modular system. The core, the theme and usually between ten and forty plugins are developed further by different vendors on different cycles. Every update can close security vulnerabilities – and, in the worst case, cause an incompatibility. This is exactly why maintenance is not a one-off task but an ongoing process with fixed procedures: check, back up, update, verify, document.

The difference between “clicking updates” and professional maintenance lies in safeguarding this process. A backup is created before every update, critical changes are tested beforehand, and after the update the homepage, forms and – for shops – the checkout are checked. That way, errors are caught by us, not by your customers.

What does professional WordPress maintenance include?

Professional WordPress maintenance covers six areas: updates, backups, security, monitoring, performance and personal support. They work hand in hand: updates close security vulnerabilities, backups safeguard every state, monitoring reports outages and anomalies immediately, and performance care keeps the website fast. Support ensures that a real person responds if something does happen.

Updates

The WordPress core, themes and plugins are updated on fixed cycles – regularly, twice weekly or three times weekly depending on the plan. We apply security updates immediately, regardless of the cycle. A restore point is created before every update, and after the update we check the key pages and forms.

Backups

Files and database are backed up daily and stored separately from the website. A backup is only as good as its restoration – that is why restoring in an emergency is part of our scope of services and is tested on a sample basis.

Security

Firewall, malware scans, login monitoring and brute-force protection are included in every plan. The Enterprise plan adds country and IP blocking as well as a CDN with DDoS protection. Attacks on WordPress are automated – protection must therefore be permanently active as well.

Monitoring

Availability is checked continuously. If the website goes down or the server responds unusually slowly, we receive an alert and begin root-cause analysis – usually before the first customer calls. Under the Enterprise plan, monitoring runs around the clock.

Performance

Caching, image optimisation, database care and monitoring of Core Web Vitals keep loading times low. After major updates we check again whether the values have worsened – performance is a maintenance topic, not a one-off project.

Why maintenance matters

A WordPress website changes even when nobody touches it: plugins are developed further, PHP versions change, new vulnerabilities are published. Without maintenance, the gap between the installed version and the current one grows – and so does the risk.

Risks of unmaintained websites

Security vulnerabilities

Known vulnerabilities in outdated plugins are exploited automatically. Attackers are not looking for your website – they are looking for the version.

Data loss

Without external, tested backups, content, orders and inquiries are permanently lost after a server problem.

Outages

Faulty updates or incompatibilities lead to blank pages – often unnoticed for days if nobody is monitoring.

Loss of visibility

Slow or compromised pages lose rankings. Malware warnings in the browser cost additional trust.

Unpredictable costs

Cleaning up a hacked website costs many times the monthly maintenance fee – and always happens at the wrong moment.

Technical debt

The longer updates are postponed, the bigger the jump. After two years of standstill, an update is no longer a click but a project.

Maintenance is therefore above all risk management. It does not prevent every incident, but it ensures that an incident remains manageable: a current backup exists, the state is documented and there is someone who responds. You will find a detailed cost analysis under

WordPress Maintenance for Businesses

For businesses, the website is a sales channel, a recruiting portal and the first point of contact for customers. Outages and security incidents therefore have an impact both internally and externally. Professional maintenance creates three things that matter in a business context: predictability, traceability and a defined point of contact.

Predictability means a fixed monthly amount instead of emergency hourly rates. Traceability comes from the monthly maintenance report, which documents which updates were applied and which incidents were averted – evidence that helps with internal audits and insurance questions. And a dedicated contact shortens the time to resolution in a real emergency.

Maintenance for WooCommerce

Online shops are the most demanding case. In addition to the core, theme and plugins, there are WooCommerce itself, payment providers, shipping services and tax extensions. A faulty update hits revenue directly here: if the checkout does not work, the website is technically online and commercially offline.

For shops, we therefore test updates beforehand in a staging environment and check the complete order process after applying them. We also monitor checkout errors and payment integrations.

Industry solutions for service providers and medical practices

In advice-intensive industries, almost every inquiry depends on a working form – and when it fails, nobody notices for a long time. These pages show what we pay particular attention to in each field.

Industry solutions for industry and infrastructure

In construction, healthcare, transport and insurance, large volumes of data, shift operations and sensitive data come together. These pages describe how maintenance is tailored to this.

Maintenance contract instead of one-off orders

A WordPress maintenance contract defines which services are provided at what intervals and how we respond in an emergency. For you, that means fixed costs and a binding commitment instead of billing by effort after the damage is done.

Our contracts run monthly and can be cancelled at the end of any month. There is no minimum term and no setup fee. We take over existing websites after an initial review in which we catch up on updates, secure the website and set up backups and monitoring.

Frequently asked questions about WordPress maintenance

These are the questions we receive most often. For anything else, a short message is enough.

Request a free consultation

Usually one to two business days. Once we have received access, we carry out the initial review, catch up on outstanding updates and set up backups, security modules and monitoring.

No. Maintenance is independent of hosting. However, if the server is demonstrably the cause of outages or slow loading times, we will make a recommendation.

We roll the website back to the state before the update, analyse the cause and only apply the update again once a solution is found. The restore point is created before every update.

Small adjustments and technical questions are part of the service. Extensive content or layout work is quoted separately and transparently in advance.

Monthly via the maintenance report: updates performed, backup status, login attempts blocked, malware scans and availability over the period.

Yes, at the end of the month and without a minimum term. On request, we hand over the backups and the documentation of your setup.
