Attackers aren’t looking for your website – they’re looking for a plugin version. And they find it in seconds, automatically, around the clock. Based on evaluations from the daily care of over 500 business websites, one pattern is clear: around 80 percent of all successful WordPress compromises trace back to an outdated or no longer maintained plugin.

How attacks actually work

The most common misconception is: “My website is too small to be interesting.” Attacks on WordPress, however, are rarely targeted; they are automated. Bots scour the web for websites that use a specific plugin version with a publicly documented vulnerability. Whether a corporation or a dental practice is behind the site makes no difference to the scan.

Such an attack consists of three steps: detecting the software in use, matching it against a list of known vulnerabilities, and exploiting them. All three steps run in seconds without any human involvement. Successful hits are logged and reused later – for sending spam, redirecting to third-party sites, or as a stepping stone to other accounts on the same server.

What gets attacked is not the website, but the version.

The window between vulnerability and attack

When a vulnerability is published, an update usually appears at the same time. From that moment the flaw is publicly known – and therefore usable by automated scans. Websites that don’t apply the update are demonstrably vulnerable from the moment of publication, not just at some later point.

This is where update frequency decides everything. Anyone who updates monthly keeps a window of several weeks open on average. Anyone who checks twice a week reduces it to a few days. This difference is the real subject of professional maintenance.

Security doesn’t come from a single plugin, but from shortening the time between the release of an update and its installation.

Typical entry points

In day-to-day care, a few patterns keep recurring. Four of them cause most incidents:

Abandoned plugins. Extensions that are no longer maintained by the developer receive no more security updates – but remain actively installed.

Deactivated but present plugins. Deactivation does not remove the code. Files remain reachable via the URL.

Expired premium licenses. Without a valid license, the plugin no longer delivers updates – often unnoticed for months.

Unprotected login. Without a limit on login attempts, wp-login.php remains a permanently open target.

How to recognize an incident

Visible defacements are rare. More common are inconspicuous signs: suddenly rising server load, unknown administrator accounts, changed file timestamps, redirects that only affect mobile devices, or a Google warning in Search Console. That is why monitoring is part of maintenance and not optional.

What helps in practice

What works is a combination of a few, consistently carried-out measures – not the longest possible list of installed security plugins.

Measure

Effect

Effort

Updates 2× per week

closes known vulnerabilities promptly

ongoing

Remove unused plugins

reduces the attack surface

one-time

Login protection & 2FA

stops brute-force attempts

one-time

External daily backups

shortens recovery time

ongoing

Monitoring

makes incidents visible early

ongoing

How professional WordPress maintenance reduces risk

Regular maintenance by an external provider solves the core problem: the lack of time. In practice, updates don’t fail for lack of knowledge, but because nobody in the company takes on the task with real accountability. Professional maintenance closes this gap with fixed processes: updates are carried out on a defined schedule, every change is documented, every incident is logged.

In addition, an experienced maintenance provider checks for dependencies before the update – a plugin update that breaks a function in use is just as harmful as a skipped one. This quality step is missing from automatic updates without human oversight.

What a maintenance contract specifically covers

Regular plugin, theme and core updates with functionality checks

Daily external backups with tested restoration

Firewall configuration and brute-force protection at login

Ongoing monitoring of availability and server load

Monthly maintenance report documenting all measures carried out

Conclusion

WordPress is not insecure – outdated installations are. The difference between a maintained and an unmaintained website lies not in the software, but in regularity. Anyone who organizes updates, backups and monitoring with real accountability reduces the risk to a level that is acceptable for business websites.

The window between a published vulnerability and the first automated attack is often less than 24 hours. The update schedule that applies to your website plays a major part in determining this risk.

Start WordPress Maintenance

Attackers don’t look for your website, but for known vulnerabilities.
